Volleyball 19 January 2008

Bethnal Green SPA Centre played host to the CSSC London Regional Volleyball which took place on Saturday 19th January 2008.

Coaching and competition games were on offer to attendees from various departments such as HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), Government Actuaries Dept (GAD), Natural England, and Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD).

The day followed on from previous lines established under Festival format where the emphasis is on open participation, development and promotion of the benefits of playing a team sport such as Volleyball. Skill levels ranged from beginner up to Departmental and Civil Service representative level.

Clear benefits were seen from the foundations of previous year's events under the new Festival approach, with once new faces now becoming familiar and subsequent progression of skill levels.

The event kicked off with a short coaching session aimed at the basic skills of the game, with the emphasis of imparting the key components, principles and then actual practice drills relating to player movement, passing the ball (volleying and digging), serving, and spiking (attacking the ball over the net).

After the coaching session, a short fun team competition got underway with 4-a-side games, which was won by HMRC.

A break for lunch then saw all attendees mixed up into 6 a-side mix team games which were continually changed over a number of game rounds. This gave the opportunity for people to play with other people from different departments and skill levels.

Scores from each game were recorded against each individual, which combined with the way teams were continually changing, gave everyone an equal opportunity to obtain one of the 11 selection spots to go forward and take part in the CSSC National Volleyball Festival.

Key impressions from the day were the enthusiasm of attendees, encouragement for example from senior players to those new to the sport, and overall enjoying the day.

The day finished off with the handing out of prizes and confirmation of those who have been selected to go forward to Festival.
