Modern Ballroom and Latin American Dance Class – Beginners’ Night
- February 2006
This year’s induction into the Modern Ballroom and Latin American
Dance Class at the Civil Service Recreation Centre in Chadwick Street
took place in the Westminster Room on Wednesday 15 February.
The event was completely sold out!
Over 80 civil servants turned up to learn basic steps in Waltz and Cha-Cha-Cha.
Learning the basics
Connie Riley, Ballroom and Latin teacher of over
twenty years standing at the centre, took the class. With many more
years of
teaching
and competition
dancing behind her, Connie got down to business very quickly dividing
the group into two, with one half watching and the other launched straight
into the change steps of the basic Waltz.
Before they knew it, they
were progressing in pairs along the floor. Alternating between the
two groups,
Connie moved to basic Cha-Cha-Cha, focusing on the different lead
and hold of Latin dancing. The especially extended hour and a half class
seemed to go very quickly, with both dancing and the social aspect
a
great hit
with everyone attending.
CSSC London presentation
An added bonus of the evening was a presentation by Ray Collins, Centre
Manager, and Business Development Executive James Kennedy, on the work
of CSSC London. Ray and James
gave a warm welcome to all attending and were available for the whole
evening
in
the Victoria Room to answer questions about membership and activities.
Both
reported that interest was high, with many of those not already CSSC
members keen to take membership application forms away with them to complete.
With a glass of wine on the house, impressions were already highly favourable!
A great turnout
Charles Stewart, who organises the class, was delighted with the turnout.
Some work had gone into preparation for the evening, in particular in
ensuring everyone had a partner to dance with. But the success of
the evening and the pleasure everyone gained from the event made it all
worthwhile.
The event was captured in photographs by Vyachelsav Deryabin, a photography
student and son of Galina, Charles’s partner, swelling the class
archive.
The evening closed with a huge round of applause for Connie, thanks
for everyone involved in the event and the promise of a bumper turn out
for the follow up classes.
