MATCHES
Of 23 fixtures arranged, including new fixtures against Southall and District BA and Bolingbroke BC, 21 matches were played. One match was cancelled by our opponents and one was rained off. The record of 12 won, 8 lost, and one abandoned half way through due to rain, was a substantial improvement on last season. We had a most enjoyable season and our congratulations for this must go to President Richard Foot for his excellent leadership and to Steve the Greenkeeper for his hard work on the green, and, to those who regularly supported the Club.
One of the highlights of the season was the presentation by Paul Stubbs, after the MOD match, of the CSSC’s Certificate of Recognition to Colin Kiddy for long service as a volunteer organising Civil Service level green bowls both indoors and outdoors.
COMPETITIONS
30 members participated in the championships which comprised 13 singles, 11 pairs, 4 triples and 2 fours teams. It was again disappointing to have to ‘phone round to get members to put in an entry. London did not do well in the Nationals, but our ‘fours’ champions had a close finish with the eventual National ‘Fours’ Champions in the semi-finals. We were pleased that Colin Mitchell and Peter Staples – the ‘Pairs’ finalists were able to deputise for our ‘Pairs’ Champions in the ‘Nationals’
We had 5 entries for the London Women’s Singles Championships played on an afternoon at Chiswick in August - comprising a round-robin tournament of 4 matches of 1 hour duration each. We are pleased that the winner Anne Coward (ex Highways Agency), - the Champion for the second year running - competed in the first CSSC Open National Singles Championships to be held at Leamington Spa during the main ECSBA National Men’s Championships.
INDOOR PAIRS & FOURS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The entry of only 4 for the ‘Fours’ was disappointing, but better than last season – two other teams dropping out 2 weeks before the event. A round-robin tournament was organised at Cambridge Park IBC during January and was won by Tony Lea (MOD), Ian Streames (Royal Mail), Nick Skidmore (HMRC) and Paul Cater (BT).
The London Indoor Pairs Championships were reasonably well supported. 10 teams participated in the half day round-robin tournament at Croydon IBC at the end of February. After keenly fought out preliminaries, the final was won by Martin Jewitt (FCO) and PR Smith (ex HMRC) who beat John Wake (HO) and Mick O’Donnell (HMRC). Thank you to both teams for representing London at the CSSC National Pairs and Fours Tournament at Erewash and Nottingham IBCs respectively during April. John Farrell was an able deputy for PR Smith in the ‘National Pairs’
MEMBERSHIP
Despite the high turn-over of CSSC membership we were pleased to maintain a membership of 47 men plus 3 women despite the loss of 9 members. We continue to publicise our Club and competitions in the Surrey and Middlesex County Yearbooks and by sending posters to local clubs, but, there should be more publicity for Civil Service bowls in CSSC’s Leisure Scene, and Departmental Magazines and at their Departmental events. - There are still many bowlers who do not know about the Civil Service bowling ‘set-up’ There are still a lot of bowlers, particularly retired ones, who have not a PC. or, do not regularly look at CSSC Websites. Leisure Scene is the only publicity to get into retired CSSC members’ homes.
NATIONAL OFFICIALS
We thank all National Officials of both ECSBA and CSBA for the work and travelling they put in on our behalf for keeping Civil Service bowling ‘on the map’.
