BOWLING NEWS – 2007 Results

President Micky Mowle successfully led the London Civil Service Bowling Club members through its 82nd season at Chiswick Sports Ground. Club membership was maintained at 50 despite a high turnover of members. 22 matches were arranged, including a new fixture against Worthing and District Bowling Association at Beach House Park, Worthing, -the current home of the English Bowling Association. Due to cancellation of matches by our opponents and bad weather, only 16 matches were played comprising 5 wins, 10 losses and 1 drawn. From a results point of view it was the worst season for a number of years possibly due to 2 experienced moving away and to the unavailability of another, nevertheless there was some enjoyable bowling, particularly against MOD., Southampton Civil Service, and Farnborough Civil Service Clubs.

Club Championships and Nationals

20 members competed in the Club Championships. There were 8 entries in singles, 8 in the Pairs, 4 in the Triples and 2 in the Fours. The entry for the singles and triples was disappointing. Due to difficulties that members have with arranging dates the triples and fours to be played, fixed dates were stipulated but with only limited success.

The under-mentioned London Champions will be presented at the AGM with Championship Cups and engraved crystal wine goblets. As usual they travelled to Victoria Park, Leamington Spa to compete in the English Civil Service Bowling Association National  Championships during August Bank Holiday week, but did not do as well as in previous years. London will not again be represented in 2008 at the International Bowling Tournament at Gosforth, Newcastle on Tyne.

London Bowling Champions 2007
Singles – Tony Lea (MOD) Runner-up – Des Hunter (Royal Mail)
Pairs – Nick Skidmore (HMRC), Paul Cater (BT)
Triples – Chris McCarthy (DEFRA), Martin Jewitt (F & CO), Robin Smith (Royal Mail)
Fours -  Micky Mowle (Prison Service), Chris McCarthy, Robin Smith, Martin Jewitt

Women’s Singles Championships 2007

6 women members competed in the London CSSC Women’s Singles Championships 2007 in a round-robin tournament on the green at the Chiswick Sports Ground. As usual the event was keenly contested by competitors over 5 matches and the overall winner was not decided until the last round when Anne Coward (ex Highways Agency) beat Diane Harris (ex Kew Gardens) to win the Championship for 2007.

INDOOR BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007

CSSC introduced a Pairs Championships this year which appeared to destroy much of the enthusiasm that there was for the Fours Championships for which there was an entry of only two, and was won after a disqualification, by Tony Lea (MOD), Paul Fuller (DCA), Nick Skidmore (HMRC), and Keith Beckett substituting for Paul Cater (BT).

In contrast, the first London Indoor Pairs Bowling Championships was very successful. 12 teams participated in a half day round-robin tournament comprising 5 rounds of 8 ends each, - held at Croydon Indoor Bowling Club on 28 February. After a more keenly fought semi-finals, the final was won by Christine Wooler (GOSE) and Keith Beckett ( ex Valuation Agency). Thank you to both winning teams for representing London at the CSSC National Pairs and Fours Championships at Erewash and Nottingham Indoor Bowling Clubs respectively.
