Challenge: in Barbados, 10-25 October 2007
(Last update: 09:00 29/10)
Twenty two teams from CSSC London plus sixteen teams from the Southern and South East Regions arrived in Barbados on 10th and 11th October to take on local civil service and other teams. With participants, families and organisers totaling some 230, CSSC is the largest sports group yet to visit Barbados which is an island dedicated to sport.
The events got underway in earnest on Friday with volleyball, netball,
badminton, road tennis and petanque. After a quiet day on Saturday with just the tennis event taking place, Sunday had football, cricket and rounders to look forward to - with indoor activities and quizzes on Monday night and the medals and pesentations on Tuesday - followed for most people by a variety of trips, friendly matches and so on.
Note: your last chance to qualify for the autumn 2008 trip is very soon. More

Netball |
Friday |
Barbados won the match against London 35–7, although the match was much closer than the result suggests. The Bajan team included part of the Barbados Olympic Squad.
The match with the S/SE team from Portsmouth was exciting throughout the 4 long quarters, with never more than 3 points between the teams. The match ended 22-22. |

Volleyball |
Friday |
Barbados won both matches in this event - perhaps not surprising as they had Olympic reps in their squad.
London lost 2-0: (25 -12 and 25 –16).
South/South East made a much closer fight of it, winning their first game 25-21 but losing the next two, narrowly, 25-23 and 15-11. |

Petanque |
Friday |
A very close fought contest this year, played as usual in the car park opposite the Blue Horizon (complete with new water hazards!) with amused looks from the passing traffic.
Barbados beat the S/South East team, 2 sets to nil.
The second match, against London, proved very well fought, with the local VIPs John and Malcolm, and the London teams, sharing the honours with a 1-1 draw, just before dusk set in, enabling London to take comfort from the fact that we didn't lose this year! But not enough to save the overall match! |

Golf pairs |
Friday & Sunday |
London lost their first match on the last hole. The Barbados team included ex Barbados and English County Cricketer and now national golf player Franklyn Stephenson (handicap 0 on this course). On day two they were unable to do better but went down fighting.
The pairs from S/SE won one and lost one, again on the last hole, on the first day (Friday). On day two (Sunday) they won both their matches to help gain a very creditable overall draw for the CSSC team. |

London has never won this key match in previous years, against the local Police veterans, but this year they turned the tables and were very worthy 3-1 winners. |

Ladies Football |
Sunday |
In the absence of their Bajan opponents (who were otherwise engaged due to international commitments), the London team took the points for this event due to the "no show on the day".
The ladies nevertheless took on seemingly all comers in a great spirit - both Bajan and London men - and gave a very good account of themselves. They beat the London Mens Vets 3-2 and gave the Barbados Mens Vets a good fight, losing 3-0. Friendly and mixed games continued for some time, with a London mixed team losing narrowly to Barbados 3-2.
The match proper was played on Monday evening at the University pitch under floodlights, with the ladies earning a very impressive 2-0 win against the local favourites. |

Sunday |
A very interesting match, watched by the British High Commissioner. London bowled the Barbados Police Force team out with 3 out of their 10 overs to spare. This put our London team (from DWP Adelphi) in a good position to win if they kept their nerve. After 5 overs they were well ahead (at 39/0) and were well on the way to victory.
Unfortunately the weather intervened and a 10 minute torrential downpour ruined the wicket. With further showers anticipated, and little chance of the wicket drying sufficiently to resume play, the Duckworth-Lewis rules were consulted and extrapolated as the (now) famous "Butterfield-McGuire" method - which gave London a narrow 2 run victory. So for the first time in 4 years of trying in an event we thought we had little chance of ever winning - London had beaten Barbados! Banks beers all round. |

Dominoes |
Monday |
An exciting event, in the knowledge that the Bajans were high upon the Caribbean rankings. The S/SE team succumbed bravely; however the London team went from strength to strength and would no doubt have won had the match gone on to 7 sets.
Scores: Barbados beat S/SE 3-6, 3-6, 1-6; Barbados beat London 2-6, 4-6, 4-6. |

Cribbage |
Monday |
The cribbage has as always a thoroughly enjoyable vet, played on the atmospheric, dimly lit balcony of the Police Club, overlooking the Weymouth playing fields (and the bus depot!). Both visiting teams played bravely against the strong Barbados club, and lost their games. |

Monday |
This was a new event this year and the London team had no idea what to except. The Bajan team Included the retired head of the Civil Service Sir Carlisle Burton, and his wife Hyacinth, Lady Burton, plus two local academics. The rules and play looked extremely complicated to the innocent bystander, but all players knew the international rules well. After a slow start the London team progressed as the evening went on, and after some 3 hours play enjoyed a final win of 87 to 41 IM points. |

Sports Quiz |
Monday |
The sports quiz had a new format this year which caught some by surprise: the final 72 points being earned by individual questions. This round was not London’s strong point, but they held on to their earlier large margin, and won by 54, to Barbados 52 and S/SE 47 points. |

Rounders |
Tuesday |
This was scheduled to play on Sunday, but with the ground still somewhat waterlogged after the downpour, and the surface slippery, the matches were postponed.
A shortened match was rearranged on Tuesday morning. This was the last event and London and S/SE need to won both games to overtake Barbados in the points table.
In the first game Barbados scored 3.5 points, and London 8.5, thus being clear winners.
In the second game, the same Barbados team confined S/SE to 6.5 points with some excellent fielding, and dismissing 2 of their best batters in the first over. In their innings, Barbados had some good shots, but started running out of batters with some excellent stumping and catching by S/SE. They also scored 6.5 after the 19 balls allowed.
In the event of a tie, "no balls" are counted: Barbados had 12 recorded against them, and S/SE 7; so S/SE were declared the winners of this game, and thus the London/S/SE group took the full 20 points. |
