Sport and leisure in London

"Enjoy Sports & Leisure in London" - leaflet cover pictureWhat do you want to do apart from work? Holidays, going to the theatre, outings? Play sport or take part in recreational activities – seriously, or for fun, or the social scene?

This page sets out the wide range of sports and leisure activities available through CSSC London:

Joining costs very little, and we aim to give you a warm welcome, and activities at affordable, competitive prices – good value for money!

Who can join?

Membership of CSSC (the Civil Service Sports Council) is open to people employed by Government departments and agencies, the Post Office, BT, and many other public bodies and companies carrying out ex-Civil service work.

For more information - see how to join.

What does CSSC London offer?

  • A wide range of quality sports and recreational activities, both popular and specialist – from angling and athletics to tennis and volleyball, including some that would normally be beyond the reach of many, such as sailing and flying.
  • Health and fitness – from aerobics and dance, to fitness centres and yoga.
  • Clubs and bars for members to meet, socialise and relax in.
  • A significant range of membership privileges – such as discounted rates at hotels, holiday companies, leisure centres, tourist attractions and health clubs, cheap theatre or cinema tickets. [Further information is available on the CSSC web site]

Whatever your interests, we may well already cater for it. And if not – we’re always keen to promote and support new activities!

Leisure Scene, CSSC’s national magazine, will be sent to you three times a year, with full details of activities (including those organised by CSSC London). It is important that CSSC Head Office have your home address on their membership database, so that you can receive the magazine and offers booklet.

As soon as you have your membership card, you can start taking advantage of the discounts available to members, and taking part in activities – you should normally begin by talking to those who organise the individual activities you’re interested in.

How is CSSC organised?

CSSC is essentially a network of clubs and organisations – with a small Head Office staff, including regional Business Development Executives.

Many of the people you will come across – those organising events, activities etc – do so on a purely voluntary basis. Activities and facilities are supported financially by CSSC, from members’ subscriptions, but individual clubs, activities and events charge their own subscriptions, entry fees etc.

CSSC has its own organisers who arrange activities in the area. These include competitions, fun events and taster days. For a number of sports, there are opportunities to compete (at Regional or National level) on behalf of CSSC. A number of CSSC Clubs and Societies are also based in London.

The wide range of activities, facilities and membership privileges offered by CSSC complements those provided by Departments’ own sports and social organisations.

Can I help?

We aim to provide a wide range of members’ activities in London. But we are constantly reviewing these in the light of changes in the Civil Service, the leisure industry, and the interests and expectations of our members. And we welcome new activities, and are always glad to hear from people with ideas – including people willing to contribute to the organising of events and clubs, or on committees.
