CSSC London - Management Board members' interests

This page provides a brief introduction to the members of the CSSC London Management Board, and also indicates any specific professional, sporting or personal interests they may have that are relevant to the work of the Board.

Chairman - Roy Alder

I have been involved with Civil Service Sport as long as I can remember. Although my memory is now near-terminal, I do recall playing football for the Ministry of Health way back in the 60s. I have run 10 marathons, and although I still keep fit, much of my more recent time has been given over to sports administration. I have served the Department for Health & Social Security Sports Association (HASSRA) as London Chairman and then National Chairman for 15 years, and for the past 2 years I was President of CSSC London Region. I look forward to my current role as Chairman of CSSC London and hope that, whether as an organiser or participant, you will support the CSSC London team in the various forthcoming events and activities that are on offer.

Roy Alder

Vice-Chairman - Ian Hughes

I have been a CSSC member since I joined the Service in 1979. I was (unpaid) Education Department London SSC Secretary for about 7 years, organised Sports Days and Departmental clubs, negotiated new sports and recreational facilities when the Department moved its HQ, and was the Department's London Vice-Chair and Chair for about another 7 years. I joined the Recreation Centre's Management Committee when it was at Monck Street, and chaired the sub-committee which oversaw the move to Chadwick Street; shortly before that move I became Chairman. I lead a DfES team making policy on enterprise education and school-business links, and I actually enjoy it. My CSSC volunteer contribution is about the boring committee work, which I try to make more interesting by losing my temper inappropriately. I do the 'recreation' part rather more than the 'sports' part: I like beer, wine, Spurs, gardening, restaurants, house-swaps, reading (thrillers and sci-fi and sometimes the more difficult stuff), and Angela.

Ian Hughes

Treasurer - Dave Graham

I joined CSSC in 1959 while a 16yr old MOD apprentice but it was not until 1967 when as a founder member of the Aquila Film Society I first took an active role in CSSC. During the next 35 years I tried my hand at every job that building and running a clubhouse and sports field entailed. As hands on Bromley Area Association Chairman for 25 years I presided during both its ascendancy to become a flourishing operation with an 80% membership on our parent site, and its decline as staff were dispersed under "Options for change". In the mid 90's I was invited also to become an officer on the London Regional Council and a few years later I became Treasurer of both the Regional Council and Chadwick Street and was therefore well able to see the huge advantage of combining all the CSSC London operations. I was honoured to become a member of the London Board, and take a particular interest in Publicity, IT and Development as well as of course the financial planning of CSSC London. I have always had many interests as an electronics engineer but my sporting activities were sailing and hill walking, nowadays however I specialise in recreational activities. I am delighted to be a founder member of the Barbados Challenge planning group.

Members:

Anne Barnes

I am the Secretary of the Comets (Metropolitan Police Sports and Social Association). I have worked for the Metropolitan Police for more than 22 years and I have been in post as Comets Secretary for almost two years. My role is to organise and promote sports, recreation and social activities within the Metropolitan Police. The Comets hope to make a concerted effort to promote membership of the CSSC in the coming year.

I was a member of the CSSC for about five years but I left, owing to pressure of work. Now, I am so pleased that I have rejoined because the CSSC has so much to offer. When I joined in with a game at the Brownie pack I help to run, I became so puffed out I could hardly speak. Realising how unfit I had become, I vowed that I would make the most of the CSSC clubs and facilities in order to improve my health and fitness. I have started by joining the CSSC squash section and I hope to join a few of the dance and aerobic classes.

The CSSC London Staff are working incredibly hard in organising new and exciting events and I look forward to hearing what they have planned for the future. I hope to see you all at the CSSC Games in April 2007 (I’m on Car Park and marshalling duty).

Dave Bower

I am currently the General Secretary of the Defra Sports and Social Association (SSA) and am responsible for promoting sports and social activities in the Department and its Executive Agencies/NDPBs. The SSA also acts as a link between CSSC and the Defra membership and is the central contact point when entering Departmental teams in CSSC events. I have been a member of CSSC for longer than I care to remember and have always had a great interest in sport, whether as a player or as a spectator. Age, infirmity and beer now prevent much participation although cricket and squash still manage to keep me relatively fit.

Nigel Harris

Member of the London Management Board, with responsibility for Development and Staffing issues. Formerly Hon. Sec. of Chadwick Street (and its predecessor at Monck Street) since the 1980s.

Hon. Sec for the CSSC “London Region”; member of the CSSC Management Committee and the CSSC Sports and Leisure sub Committee

Also involved with the London/Barbados planning team, and the South coast/London Multi Sports Committee. Former occasional organiser of Regional Competitions including Cricket 6s, football 6s and GK/Sports Quizzes.

Departmental: Member of DEFRA (formerly MAFF) Sports and Social Committee and involved with Sports Days at Chiswick.

Peter Jones

I have been a member of HASSRA (my Departmental Association) & the CSSC since the 6th of November 1984 – the day I joined the Civil Service. In truth, most of my participation in sports and social activities has been with HASSRA (Cricket, Bowls (Flat, Crown Green and, Indoor), Darts, Quizzes, Quiz Mastering, Compere/MC, Tug-of-War and, in the last few years, Board Member), with sporadic – though spectacular – failures, when I entered the odd CSSC event. However, all that changed when, through a combination of luck, a partner who could play Darts well and, umpteen pints of “Guinness”, I got to go to Barbados and take part in the Challenge, in 2005. (It’s been downhill since then.) Seriously, it brought home to me how much I had got out of sports and social activities (with both HASSRA and the CSSC) and, that even if I contributed to both, only as a Board member and never again as a competitor, for the next umpteen years, I’d still be ‘in credit’, so to speak. That is what I see as my mission – to give something back. With your help and that of the team in London, I aim to succeed……and give loads back!

David Pearson

I have been actively involved in the running of recreational Clubs within CSSC for over 25 years. I have been involved in running the CS Canoe Club since the late 1980s and was formerly heavily involved with the Sub-Aqua Club. Since the early 1990s I have been actively involved with CSSC London Region, as auditor, Chairman and more recently as Secretary. Within my "day job", I work in Defra's Communications Directorate, and I hope to bring that experience (together with my ongoing recreational sports interests, and particular interests in photography and video) to bear in providing technical, editorial and image management of the CSSC London web site, and in taking a particular interest in ensuring that all our publicity and communication activities strive for customer-focus and professionalism.

Chris Scott

I am the current General Secretary of SPARTA, the sports and recreational association for both DCLG and DfT and their respective Executive Agencies. This was quite a departure for me after more than 30 years doing policy work in DCLG and its predecessor incarnations, although I had been involved with SPARTA previously in a number of voluntary roles, including Vice Chairman. SPARTA has some 28 London Clubs, covering a range of activities as diverse as: Martial Arts, Netball, Chess and even the Wool Club, so the days (and some of the evenings) are usually pretty full. I joined CSSC in 1972, soon after joining the Civil Service, and was mortified when my red membership card (a badge of longevity) was subsequently stolen from the old Recreation Centre in Monck Street, along with my wallet (I've now got over it.). I have always been involved in sport and recreation activities throughout my life (football, cricket and darts primarily, although I have also dabbled with rowing, swimming and tennis) and now concentrate on what the body (and my wife) will allow - which isn't much, I'm afraid. I am a fairly new member of the London Management Board and hope that my SPARTA experience will be of use to the Board.

Chris Scott

Roger Tartufolo

I have been a CSSC member for over 40 years since joining the Civil Service in 1962. In the early years I played Badminton, Table Tennis and Football in various Civil Service Leagues and competitions. Shortly before I moved out of London in 1971 I qualified as a referee and eventually progressed to become a Class 1 referee for the Essex County Football Association. Over the years I have been variously Treasurer and Secretary of the Supreme Court Badminton Club before being elected as Secretary and now Chairman of the Department for Constitutional Affairs (formerly Lord Chancellor's Department). Outside the Civil Service I have also spent several years as coach and manager of a local youth football team. I am married with 2 children, and live in Witham, Essex.

CSSC London Staff

(John Butterfield is a member of LMB. The Chadwick Street and Chiswick Managers and the Business Development Executives and Events and Volunteer Coordinator for CSSC London and the BDE for South/South East Regions normally attend LMB meetings.)

John Butterfield
CSSC London Manager

Formerly a professional cricketer and amateur international footballer, I have represented CSSC in both of these sports on numerous occassions. I joined CSSC as Regional Liaison Officer for London and the South East Regions in 1974, before taking on responsibility for CSSC London Grounds in 1983 and subsequently CSSC London in 2003. I was originally seconded to CSSC from the Ministry of Defence. I have an active interest in the London sporting and recreational programme, am heavily involved with the Barbados Challenge, and enjoyed the CSSC London trip to France in September. I am based at our Westminster Club in Chadwick Street where I make regular use of the excellent Health & Fitness, Bar & Restaurant facilities.

Brian Carrick
Manager, CS Sports Ground, Chiswick; Finance Director, CSSC London

I have worked in Finance for over 30 years with TSB Group Plc, Willis Caroon Plc, Close Brothers Group Plc and Thales Plc, and am professionaly qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. Now an "armchair athlete", I used to row and have competed at Henley as well as in the Heads of the River races on the Thames. I am normally to be found at Chiswick.

Brian Carrick

Ray Collins
Manager, Chadwick Street

Previous to joining CSSC as Manager of Chadwick Street and Eltham Sports Ground in February 2002. I had spent the best part of twenty years as a Licensee, running Pubs for Whitbread and Yates’s, with a stint as General Manager for Jongleurs Comedy clubs. With the old bones starting to ache and creek a bit I try to keep fit with a bit of swimming and cycling. My sporting claim to fame was beating Keith Deller in a match while he was the reigning Embassy world darts champion (no sarcastic remarks please). If you would like to learn about any more of my amazing sporting feats you will normally find me around Chadwick Street Rec Centre.

James Kennedy
Business Development Executive (BDE), CSSC London

I have been a member of CSSC and of HASSRA since I joined the Civil Service in 2000. On joining DWP, I was fortunate to work full time as Regional Assistant for the old HASSRA South region. This role helped me develop skills that have proved very useful in my current post as BDE for CSSC London. I have kept associate membership of HASSRA South East and have endeavoured to bring the two organisations closer together whenever I can.

I have always enjoyed being involved in sports and leisure and I still like to keep fit, enjoying my football, cricket, swimming and table tennis. I have entered the odd tournament in different guises and always enjoy the social side of events. In 2005, I decided to take up fencing again with CSSC London Fencing Club, having last fenced at university. My wife also fences with CSSC and I can say that married life has never been quite the same since we started settling domestic disagreements by duel!

With an English father and French mother, I have lived in France for many years, have dual nationality and speak French. This has been helpful when abroad with CSSC on trips to Lille and Bruges as I am able to look after our members that little bit more.

James Kennedy

Gemma Fabian
Events and Volunteer Coordinator, CSSC London

I am new to both the Civil Service and to the Sports Council. My role as Events and Volunteers Co-ordinator involves organising as many sporting events, trips, leisure and fitness activities as possible to keep all our existing members busy and happy as well as attracting new ones. I am heavily involved in the organisation of the CSSC Sports Day and the Barbados Challenge events.

I previously worked for a Higher Education College in Kent as their Events & Promotions Officer along with teaching aerobics most evenings.

Back in the days when I was a little more agile I represented Gillingham Gymnastics Club in many local and county competitions, now I am no longer able to throw myself around as much, I enjoy playing squash and am a keen runner, taking part in races such as The Race for Life. My ultimate goal is to run the London Marathon.

You may occasionally find me teaching an aerobics or circuits class at Chadwick Street; when I have hung up my leg warmers, the bar is my next port of call!
